South Florida Fishing with Capt. Greg Poland

Take the day off and enjoy some good ol’ fishing. MSC Pro-Staff member Capt. Greg Poland can take you to explore anywhere from the Florida Keys to the Everglades National Park to patch reefs and everything in between.

Florida Keys and the Everglades

The Florida Keys are surrounded by hundreds of square miles of shallow sand, mud and grass flats which are world-renowned for Bone and Tarpon fishing. These magnificent flats are found on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Keys as well as the Bay/Gulf side in the expansive backcountry. These premium fishing grounds fall largely within the Everglades National Park and are populated by uninhabited mangrove islands on the Gulf Side. Greg has 30+ years of experience navigating these waters and catching Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Redfish, Snook, Sea Trout, Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, and Sharks.

Deep Sea and Offshore

On the southeastern side of the Keys and the mainland of Florida lie the Straits of Florida between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. These deeper waters are teeming with big game fish species. In particular, the Keys are known for wintertime Sailfish action in Sailfish Alley and summertime Dolphin. Greg has the experience to get you where you want to be. Target species for Deep Sea and Offshore include Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Sailfish, Kingfish, Wahoo, Barracuda, Amberjack, and Sharks.

Wreck Fishing

Wreck fishing is a family favorite. Throughout the history of the Keys, the reefs surrounding the islands have become the final resting place for sunken ships. In modern times there are fewer natural shipwrecks, but the older shipwrecks are still great fish attractors. Schools of Permit, Amberjack, and Snapper cruise around and through the wreckage now covered by corals and sponges. The largest of the fish caught is the Goliath Grouper or Jewfish which are known to grow as large as a Volkswagen, measuring more than eight feet in length and weighing up to 800 pounds.

Reef Fishing

The Florida Keys are surrounded by vast coral formations which protect the islands from storms and provide homes for one of the most diverse populations of fish and other sea life found anywhere in the world. The Atlantic Ocean has massive reefs and on the Gulf there are smaller patch reefs. The large schools of baitfish attract hungry Snapper and Grouper, which love all the hiding places. Greg is no stranger to these parts and is quite familiar with the hiding places. Target species in the reefs include Yellowtail Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Grouper, Kingfish, Spanish and Cero Mackerel, Cobia, Sharks, and Barracuda.

Shark Fishing

Greg is skilled in the techniques necessary to catch sharks in the waters off the Florida Keys. He has been filmed on ESPN during one of his shark fishing adventures. A common technique that he employs is to chum fish within fly casting range for great visual fishing. The Keys provide opportunities for fishing sharks as they provide both shallow and deep water. Target species include Tiger, Hammerhead, Bull, Lemon, Blacktip, and Spinner Sharks.
